[press release] Liegruppen and Alkymar combine efforts to explore commercial products from mesopelagic resources.
Peder Lie (1) and Lars Olav Lie (2), Liegruppen - Kjartan Sandnes (3) and Hans Hekland (4), Alkymar.
For too long it has been an established truth that aquaculture is the only seafood business that can meet future global food demand.
Eventually science communities and management authorities have realized that the living ocean capacities has been underestimated due to relating the capacity to current catch data being around 90 mill tons and flattening.
Updated estimates calculate net global ocean annual biomass reproduction to several hundred billion tons and the mesopelagic segment of which has been estimated to at least 10 bill tons.
Liegruppen and Alkymar combine contemporary fishery technologies with state of the art enzyme based biorefinery technology to explore commercial products from mesopelagic resources. The two companies will test out several critical components as well as attempt to close knowledge gaps related to harvest/trawl tech, on board biorefinery until stable biomass. Hence pursuing further refinement on shore, testing out products in the market, addressing both critical ingredients for the feed market as well as “tasting” the high end human nutrition market.
By poteniallty exploiting in a sustainable way mesopelagic sources (lantern fish etc) together with side streams from the classical fisheries, Liegruppen and Alkynmar wil assist in paving the way for a total new industry.
In this way the new eco fisheries targeting multi trophic ocean resources will be able to make the fiheries itself much more sustainable and upscaled and at the same time meeting the grand challenge of all aquaculture:
How to find sustainable feed stock for the fast growing fish farming efforts world-wide.
